Cortinarius azureus Fr. subgenus Sericeocvbe Cap 3-7cm across, hemispherical at first, then convex; violet with reddish ochre in the center; covered in fine fibers that give it a shiny appearance. Gills adnate; deep purple to violet. Stem 60-130 x 7-l0mm, swollen at the base; violet to purple with matted white fibers overlaying it, with gray or ochre veil fragments. Flesh purplish. Odor slight. Taste slight. Spores ovoid to subglobose, warty, 7.5-10 x 6-7.5µ, quotient 1.3. Deposit rusty brown. Habitat in deciduous and mixed woods. Rare. Found in northeastern North America. Season August-September. Not edible. Comment This is a European species rather close to Cortinarius anomalus but with much more violet color, especially in the cap. |
